Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods I've never tried salt water fly fishing Dan, but I have been fly fishing for a while now. When I started, I was advised to avoid "kits and combo's". I guess you would need a 7/8 or more powerful rod which you could pick up relatively cheap. The reel is nothing more than somewhere to store the line so a cheap "Rimfly" might be adequate. You will probably also want a weight forward fly line to match the rod and Mullarky's used to do some very cheap ones. You could probably get away with some of your bulk 20lb mono for backing to begin with. An old favourite of many people is "Amnesia". I'm not very up to date on fly tackle prices but I feel that you might get better kit by buying it individually. There's bound to be plenty of other Forum members who know far more about this than me it'll be interesting to see what they think. I hope this helps for the time being. __________________ Rich "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing to excess!"

I would agree with most of what Lazarus has said except that I would go for a 9-10ft 9# rod to cope with strong sea breezes. You should aim to go for a salt resistant reel & fittings & flies tied on proper saltwater hooks. Someone like sportfish should be able to give you good advice. Should be good fun in summer with species like Bass, Pollack, Garfish, Scad & Mackerel. Good luck mate.

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods i get my flies from fulling mill , also i have heard that weaver fish have been caught on flies!? i wouldnt fly fish much in the winter, strong winds and alot of rain it is far better fly fishing in the summer. when all of this crap weather gets out the way ill show you a bit of it. __________________ Fishing for a living

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods Dan, I use a tapered leader joined to the fly line with a needle knot but only in freshwater. Most of the tapered leaders go down to about 6lb and that might not be enough if you hook a Bass!! Anyway, you might not have to worry too much about presentation if you're stripping a sizeable lure back through the surf. I know what you mean about fly fishing in the winter!! __________________ Rich "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing to excess!"

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods its much better than carrying beach casters, multipliers, all of this tackle stuff, when all you need for saltwater fly fishing is... your rod and reel ( line spooled on it ), flybox with some flies in, a packet of leaders, and a little spool of flurocarbon, and some pliers to un hook the fish. its a must do. __________________ Fishing for a living
