Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

i should of posted this in the fly fishing section, but no one would reply. so anyway there is this saltwater fly rod and reel deal for £99 - a ron thompson saltwater fly rod, fly reel ( spare spool ), backing line, and sinking and floating fly line... but the main point is the ron thompson fly rod... has anyone used this?, has it snapped easily?, should i trust ron thompson?

thanks,dan.

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

I've never tried salt water fly fishing Dan, but I have been fly fishing for a while now. When I started, I was advised to avoid "kits and combo's".

I guess you would need a 7/8 or more powerful rod which you could pick up relatively cheap. The reel is nothing more than somewhere to store the line so a cheap "Rimfly" might be adequate. You will probably also want a weight forward fly line to match the rod and Mullarky's used to do some very cheap ones. You could probably get away with some of your bulk 20lb mono for backing to begin with. An old favourite of many people is "Amnesia".

I'm not very up to date on fly tackle prices but I feel that you might get better kit by buying it individually.

There's bound to be plenty of other Forum members who know far more about this than me it'll be interesting to see what they think. I hope this helps for the time being.

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

i wouldnt say it was a kit, they have just picked individsual stuff and put it as one. it looks realy nice and i think would do me for a while, im going back there soon. and i forgot to ask, what leader should i use? braided, loop to loop, etc..

Thumbs up Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

I would agree with most of what Lazarus has said except that I would go for a 9-10ft 9# rod to cope with strong sea breezes. You should aim to go for a salt resistant reel & fittings & flies tied on proper saltwater hooks. Someone like sportfish should be able to give you good advice.

Should be good fun in summer with species like Bass, Pollack, Garfish, Scad & Mackerel. Good luck mate.

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

Dan,
I use a tapered leader joined to the fly line with a needle knot but only in freshwater. Most of the tapered leaders go down to about 6lb and that might not be enough if you hook a Bass!! Anyway, you might not have to worry too much about presentation if you're stripping a sizeable lure back through the surf.
I know what you mean about fly fishing in the winter!!

Re: Ron thompson saltwater fly rods

its much better than carrying beach casters, multipliers, all of this tackle stuff, when all you need for saltwater fly fishing is... your rod and reel ( line spooled on it ), flybox with some flies in, a packet of leaders, and a little spool of flurocarbon, and some pliers to un hook the fish. its a must do.
