Flyfished Mussels

Yesterday I was fishing for sea trout, and got a weird catch. A mussel grabbed the bend of the hook on my shrimp fly
Anyone here had an experience like this?

I,ve had it happen when using bait for freshwater & sea fishing, but never on a fly. I have hooked a couple of Bats when fly fishing in the evenings though.

Re: Flyfished Mussels

A very common reaction for a mussel regardless of what method of fishing you use-pure accident--hook nicks open mussel & it closes, mussel beds are like carpets. If you were after seatrout you were too deep.

Anyone out there still into sea fly?

Several Bats & swifts over the years-just goes to show how fast they are esspecially the bats as they tend to catch prey with their wings and transfer to the mouth--& they do it by sonar!!! What speed does a casting fly travel at? Incredible creatures.
Cheers Edwin

Re: Flyfished Mussels

Hi Fisherdave,
Spey is,or was good, I fished it 40 years ago. It would be the perfect time to try out your sea fly fishing as the waters are clear on that coast and there are many species (Cod type family) which you could catch. Do not know how to post photos on this site as I am not allowed attachments for some reason otherwise I could sent you photo's of a variety of sea flies that I have worked hard on for many years. They also work well with Perch, Pike & Trout (The bigger trout around september, although I consider it cheating for trout-however everyone seems to be at it these days)
Have a good trip & try the coast-it may be invigarating.
Cheers Edwin.

Re: Flyfished Mussels

Dont't really know. Salmon do not feed in fresh water apparently but are enticited to take what are most often shrimp like lures for some reason (apparently thier staple diet at sea). I was given a large collection of Salmon flies/tube lures & they are works of art but I am not a salmon fisherman. I have used them ocassionaly on those dead resovoir days as a last resort and caught mainly Browns. My sea lures are pretty much an accurate likeness of sandeels/fish/shrimps made of feathers/ hair but with an apoxy resin finish. Doubt whether samon would take them. Sea fish would take salmon flies however. There again a friend caught trout well on lures made from strips of coloured condoms! Fish are aggresive & pretty stupid.
