Salt Fly line advice ... Guys - decided to chuck a fly or 2 from my Kayak. Picked up a new MPX 8/9 Saltwater rod and a fladen reel £5iver from TXMaxx - what dont they sell :-) I know not the best quality but good enough to see if I like it ... So to get going to see if it works for me ... need to get some line etc. Spent hours searching the forum and totally confused myself with line - not difficult ![]() So - for a total novice - what should I get to start with ... to learn to cast & catch my first 15lb Bass ![]() I think an 8 intermediate seems fav but what about ... taper, double taper, Weight forward and all the other types available ..... Help ![]() __________________ SUPPORT THE RNLI - click : www.rnli.org.uk ... every little helps ! PLEASE REMEMBER & GIVE A LITTLE .... http://www.poppy.org.uk/

Hi Maghouse, I was in Malta recently, where I did some saltwater fly fishing. I just used a 7wtWF intermediate and 6wt floating lines with a 6lb fluorocarbon leader. As long as you clean off the salt water on the reel and line under the tap after use, you shouldn`t have any problems. Peter ![]()

Re: Salt Fly line advice ... I mostly use an intermediate WF these days, with weighted flies on a shortish but strong leader (6' of 14lb fluorocarbon + 3' sink tip) - I find that gives the best combo of easy casting and getting the fly in the zone. An intermediate line in fresh water behaves more like a floater in the salt. I don't use sinking lines as they are a pain to retrieve. I think your 8/9 is a good choice of weight, and I would go the heavy end with lines - always easier to shorten up if you feel over-weighted than add length to boost a light line - esp if there is any wind (and there is always a wind!).

Re: Salt Fly line advice ... O.k, just a thought, as its not as easy as it looks, then after some brief lessons and plenty of practice, after a couple of hours providing its not too windy you should have an idea how to load the rod enough for you to fish. Tight Lines Jason
