Re: salmon in the sea

well salmon are spawned in the river swim to the sea where they become a grilse and swim back from sea and into probably the same river where they were born. so when they come to our rivers they come from the sea if u can get at the right place with the right fly or bait im sure u can catch them

Re: salmon in the sea

it certainly is, not sure about ur chances of catching one over here in the sea but in canada i know they do it quite alot. When i fished on vancover island i fished the campbell river for them but then my guide told me about many people catching them from the beach with fly fishing kit. I didnt believe it at first and was abit wary so he suggested i gave it a try. We went to this beach, i cant recall what it was called, about a mile away from the nearest main salmon river and fished from the shore. He said that the salmon would swin up and down the beach to gradually adjust to the difference in salinity. Salmon were definetely there, not kidding, if u sat on the beach every ten minutes or so u wud see a shoal swim down the beach and the odd one would jump up in the air.

After a while, the salmon would be able to cope with the freshwater conditions found in the river and then they would move up the river to spawn. He also said that the salmon would also feed alot more at sea prior to this to ensure that they can fulfil there spawning duties. I should think moving up those rivers is hard work. So in some ways it may be easier to catch them at sea. I did try it and didnt catch anything, yet there were a couple guys to my right of which one of them landed a pink salmon of about 4lbs. So there we go, it can be done.

Re: salmon in the sea

Interesting bit of info borntofish. I know that the Salmon and Sea Trout do that along the beach at Hillhead before entering the Meon. One of my freinds regularly catches Sea Trout whilst spinning for Bass there.

Re: salmon in the sea

I once had a Salmon or a VERY large Sea trout follow in a spinner to my rod tip in North Wales. That certainly got my pulse going!
