Re: Saltwater Freshwater Fly fishing

Hi Richard,
This is definitely something I want to try. The fly fishing equipment is different for saltwater fly fishing the Fly reels, Fly rods and even the fly selection depends on the type of fish your going after. I would like to try fishing for Stripers or someday fly fish for Bonefish in the Caribbean.

Re: Saltwater Freshwater Fly fishing

The old man did some saltwater fly fishing in thialand and when I saw the flies he was using , my eyes popped out

The flies were massive , like something you put behind a boat trolling for marlin or tuna

Re: Saltwater Freshwater Fly fishing

When I was in the Cayman Islands several years ago I was watching people fly fishing off of these flat deck boats. They were fishing for Bonefish in about 2 to 3 feet of water. It looks like a lot of fun.

Smile Re: Saltwater Freshwater Fly fishing

Thanks Proffessor nice to be called a "Guru"!

The difference between Fresh and Saltwater fly fishing is the rod and reel rating which is related to the size of fly and the conditions you are fishing in.

No point using a 5 weight rod trying to cast a 8inch fly into the wind, most winds in my area of the UK come into the shore.

Rods should be rated as for Pike fishing really... #8-9 weight, line and reel to match... large arbour are best, line does not have so much memory in it when left. Rod length 9-10 feet best 9'6"

Type of line definately a shooting head!

Flies... well thats a question. in the USA they use surf candies, deceivers for stripers (Striped Bass), permit crab etc for Bonefish and some can be up to 18" long!!!

Use a short leader for Bass in the UK i would reccommend 10lb Flurocarbon and if low in diameter 12lb.

Here are a selection of flies I use for my Bassi'n.

These are just a small sample of flies that I use, as with everything else in fishing you tend to collect things!

I hope this of help to you.

Keep posting as I like to pass on my tips and tricks. If you wan to talk stripers instead of our Bass no problem, they behave in a similar way.

Cheers
Shaun
