Re: fly line soo expensive?

hi dan,

fly lines are much more expensive because they're construction is much more complex than monofilament and they do much more than just conect you to the fish,

the outer skin is very smooth to allow minimal friction and free flow through the rod rings , this is bonded to a hollow braid which provides the strength and an inner core which i think sometimes varies in diameter to alter the density of the line throughout its length to give;-
double taper.
weight forward.
or shooting head caracteristics to alter the way a line casts as the only weight used when flyfishing is the line itself.

imho , the most important thing to set up good fly fishing kit is the match between rod action and line weight/type depending on your casting style

buy the best line u can afford, it will be worth it.

gord
.( what do the rest of u guys recon , does that sound about right to you? )

Could'nt have put it better myself Gord. Other things that add to the cost are the fact that a flyline needs to be far more durable because it will be cast hundreds of times each fishing trip & will be expected to last for a year or two. Some sinking lines also have a lead core or are impregnated with tungsten. others have to maintain neutral buoyancy throughout their length. A good line should also remain supple in hot & cold conditions. I could go on forever about their characteristics but basicly they are a much higher tec product than ordinary monofil.

Re: fly line soo expensive?

It does seem really high, ALL fly kit is. And GJ is right....you get what you pay for, so get the best you can. If you take good good care of it, I think you should get several seasons out of it. I have one thats at least 15yrs old. Still serves me but I've also never gotten bigger than a 2# fish on it.
Good Luck and Tight lines

Dangermouse and pennfold

I know! Fly line can get expensive fast. It's important to knw what you need before you buy it than to expeiment. Well, Cheaper anyway! I use ORVIS wonderline. 5-6 wt or rocket taper 8 wt.

Re: fly line soo expensive?

The lads are giving sound advice reagrding price and line weight etc however if you are a complete beginner to fly fishing i would recommend you buy as cheap a line as you can find. In the beginning you'll be more like a lion tamer than fly fisherman and your line will begin to crack. once you've managed to maintian a good casting level then buy a good line. no sense in paying £50 for a cortland and smashing it up!

in trout and salmon they advertise 'mill ends' for well less than £10 and may have the odd imperfection but nothing seious. i used them as a child as i couldn't afford better and it never stopped me catching

Cheers
