Thumbs up Revels fishery report.

Having won exclusive use of two trout lakes for myself & up to four guests on Ebay at Revels fishery in Dorset I phoned Revels & booked it for yesterday (Saturday) I invited two of my fishing mates, Pete & Les & as it was Petes turn to drive he picked Les & I up at about 9am. Got to the fishery at about 10.15 & booked in. Revels fishery is a complex of about eight coarse lakes & two trout lakes & a very well stocked tackle shop. The trout lakes were about two miles away from the coarse lakes & turned out to be about an 3/4 of an acre each in size, set in a beautiful valley.

Started to fish at about 11am not really knowing what to expect. No sign of any trout so started trying a variety of different flies fished using a floating line. I saw a couple of rises & hoped that they were Brown Trout as this was my target for the species hunt. Tied on a size 20 Black Gnat & got an instant take. Hooked a fish, but it did'nt feel like a Trout. Reeled in to find a tiny Rudd had taken the fly.

Not what I was after, but welcome all the same, as I also needed a Rudd for the species hunt.
Fished on until 1.30 & all we were catching was tiny Rudd, Perch & Roach. Not what we were after but good fun anyway.
Les & I decided to take a walk to the local pub for some lunch & a beer & we left Pete who had taken sandwiches to carry on fishing. Had a nice steak & chips & a couple of pints & returned about an hour & a half later. Pete still had not seen any Trout. Beginning to wonder if we had been ripped off. Mabye there were no trout in here after all.
Then Les had a take from something that was fighting a bit harder than a Rudd.

A nice Rainbow of about 2lb went leaping in the air & promptly spat the hook out.
So there was Trout in here after all. At least one anyway.
Fished on until about 4pm, then Pete hooked & landed another Rainbow on a black buzzer.

So we all tied on teams of Buzzers & fished on feeling a bit more optimistic. We started to get some vicious pulls that were clearly trout but that were very hard to hook. Pete had another similar fish, but things were slow. I had a look in my fly box & found a bloodworm pattern that I had found tangled in a bush at Chew Valley some years back. Tied in on & cast out. Let it drift with the wind for a few monents & Bang, I was into a trout. A nice fish of about 2 1/2lbs

Cast out again & was straight into another fish. To cut a long story short I had another five fish in the next hour for a total of seven fish. All of similar size. Pete finished with two & Sadly Les landed none. All fish were returned, as it is a catch & release fishery. I suspect this is why the Trout were so shy.
Sadly I did'nt catch any Brownies, but it was still a good day.
Stopped at a nice country Pub on the way home & met up with the North Dorset Rugby club who had just won the local league & as Pete was driving, Les & I helped them celebrate
In the end, a good day was had by all.
