Knots for easy fly-changes

Hi,

What knots do you use to tie your flies to the leader? I just tried a couple of simple knots last week, and am amazed of the strength, as I thought this knots would weaken the leader more.

As you can see of the picture, the knot on the fly is just a bloodknot at the end of the leader, then a bloodknot in the hook's eye.

The other knot up in the corner is used to tie the leader, and make room for the second fly.

I have been using these knots for a week now, 6,5 hours in the sea, and four cods later the tip knot still is not broken yet

Welcome to the Forum Fisketips, I normally use a tucked bloodknot to tie on my flies & a five turn waterknot ot tie on droppers. Fishing for cod with a fly is new to me though. It would be nice if you could do a more indepth report on this subject for the forum. Theres a few people including myself on the site who are keen to learn saltwater fly fishing. Definately looking forward to hearing more!!!

Re: Knots for easy fly-changes

I just started the saltwater experience with the fly myself, last Sunday

Living 30 meters from the shore, with a great leopard beach at our property I really should have tried this before...it's so easy just to have a "fishing break" while working:)

The fly in the pic is the one, at least when it comes to codfishing:) The body is made of silver tinsel wrapped with a plastic tube actually glowing in the dark, from the kids magic knitwork :) 3 cods on this fly in the evening, another took a white shrimp lookalike dropper, 10 am and snowing!

I am after seatrout, probably that's the reason I'm just getting cods..Maybe I should turn over to fish for cod?

So you're keen on learning saltwater flyfishing? The way I see it, and my short experience with this great fishing back it up: Just go do it! The best way to learn it is to do it, and share your experience with others. Reading howto's is like fishing in the toilet

Must be nice living so close to the beach. Unfortunately I live about 100kms away so I mainly do freshwater fishing. But I enjoy sea fishing when I get the chance. Went pike fishing on my local river today (plug not fly) but ended up catching a really big perch.

Well, you know, the grass is always greener on the other side... I have not fished the beach here since I was in the teens

Well done & I would love a bit more info on this one, like what area are you fishing? (Region would do) Beach/Boat? Depth? Clarity of water? How big is the lure as it is difficult to tell by the photo but it looks like a Salmon hook & I would guess the fly is 2.5/3 inch max. Line type/size? What size Cod?
Be nice to hear from you (Or anyone in particularly around G.B--You Norweigens are lucky fishing wise.)

Well done again. Cheers Edwin.

I live in Molde on the northwest coast, here's a map reference to my beach: Map of my beach

It's no more than 2,5 meters deep 50 meters out, there's a small area with maybe 1,5 meters. That is when tide is high. The water is usually pretty clear, but now it's dark at 6pm and daytime is filled with dutys

The hook is a size 2 regular wet fly, the zonker strip is 3"
I use a #7 line and a 9" 7/8 rod for this fishing, it feels like a stick as my favourite rod is #5..

Today I spent a couple of hours in freshwater, on the ice. The lake is full of small trouts, but I think they was not hungry today :) Anyway it was a nice trip and the ice was very secure, so I'm off again tomorrow. My kids have never tried ice fishing before so I'll bring them with me tomorrow. They are so excited today they could barely go to sleep :)

Know just how they feel. I still feel the same before a fishing trip. Good luck guys.

Re: Knots for easy fly-changes

Lucky 'B*****d'!! Take the camera & post us the ice fishing.
Shall be taking my two 4.5 & 3years olds on their first fishing trip next month--sadly no Ice-- and just Eastern Silversides for prey. However they are plentiful, easy to catch & fantastic to eat.

Cheers Edwin
