Re: Determining weight of a fly rod

Yes, there is and I've got a buddy I'll bounce your question off of. He makes all his own & custom rods. He's helped me make a couple, its a lot of fun and a lot easier than you might imagine. He has even converted a couple of pooches into really nice rods, the blanks were more suited to a diff. style. =one of my fav. rods now!
I know the way he does it involves putting the blank on top of a tall shelf, He weights the 'handle' area w/ a bag of sinkers(I make those), and attaches a baggie to the tip, into which he puts pennies from before or after a certain year (has to do w/ the weight and nickle/zink/copper content) untill the blank bends a specific distance. The number of pennies converts to gram weight....etc....chart says....etc....and comes out w/ fly weight. Its alot easier to do than describe. I'll give him a call & get back.

Re: Determining weight of a fly rod

I'm at my buddie's house now. He says to go to www.rodbuilding.org for a lot of good info. Find an article about the "Common Cents System".
Or go to www.common-cents.info Forget whatever you may have been told before and follow the 'system'. Its supposed to work on fiberglass, graphite, & bamboo rods; built or blanks equally well.
Good luck, have fun, and let us know what you come up with.
ps. use pennies from 1996 and later...
