fly line backing etc?

Sounds like a version of the needle/nail knot to me.

Try using the nail knot to finish it off with. It will never come undone then.

many many thanks for all the replies,i`ve got the backing line on and used a nail knot for that,and fitted the loop successfully,i`m impressed with the way the loop grips the line,just hope it stays that way when a fish is hanging on
hopefully saturday will be the first day out with it,i`ve got a variety of flies,including a one i used many years ago-greenwells glory
