Hi, I am going campng next week in the Lake District and I have borrowed a Fly Rod and Reel and some Flies, and i was wondering what kind of fly would be the best for this time of year and that area? I think we are planning to fish mainly stillwater on Ullswater but rivers are very close aswell. This will be my first time fly fishing so I do not know much about flies. Thanks in advance James

Re: Best Fly? I am not really sure, I don't know much about flies but I think there are some dark coloured nymphs and a few lighter dry flies, there are 2 red buzzers and I have some larger flies or lures which things like marabou on them, one of these is a cats whisker fly, the others are similar to that, the other larger flies are daddy long legs and damsel flies. Hope this helps, if it is a rather obscure explanation I am sorry Thanks, James

Re: Best Fly? Well it sounds like you have a nice selection James, the question is can you cast them? The art of fly fishing starts with learning how to cast and that is not as easy as it looks. Have you had any instruction from the person who lent you the equipment? If you haven't I fear it might take the entire holiday to get the hang of it ![]() Still never mind if you cant get the hang of casting but you're on a boat, all you need do is put the fly onthe water and play out line as the boat trolls along ![]()

Re: Best Fly? I have practised casting, the person who lent me the equipment did tell my dad to tell me what to do (if that makes sense) but I already had a general idea on what to do from watching numerous fishing shows on TV. I had a good look on the internet using things like youtube and after about a week since getting the rod and reel, I seem to be doing quite well, I can get the line to land strait most of the time, anyway, as you said, the boat can help if the casting does not work out very well. Do you have any idea on which fly to use? Thanks, James

Re: Best Fly? James the choice of fly is dependant on a variety of things, what you really need is local advice from people who fish that location on a regular basis.

Re: Best Fly? James I have never fished it or even been up there, however i know it has perch, char and wild browns. The cats etc might be ok for the perch, however for the wild browns you would be better off(imho) with wet flies( black!!!!),either fished singly or in two's or threes and pulled back fairly briskly.Concentrate on fishing close in-NOT over any deep water as the fish will be in the shallows.Cast, fish it back, move along and repeat etc etc etc.Best advice-seek out the tackle shops up there and see what they advise.Good luck ![]()
