 Quick Tip Oi Oi, When tying hackled flies, slide a small coarse fishing float rubber on to the bobbin holder stem before use. Tie up your chosen pattern & slide the rubber back over the eye of the hook, pushing the hackle back & trapping it. Build the head, whip finish & varnish. When dry, remove rubber. Now you have a neat head with no varnish on the hackle.     |

| Re: Quick Tip Good tip, will give it a go when tying some dries for later on. Only tip I can offer is to use superglue more. I've used it in place of varnish quite often - especially when I've done a bit of a rubbishy whip finish. Also clear glitter nail varnish is quite good, made a few fry imitations using white poly yarn to build up the shape and then several coats of glittery varnish with a couple of stick-on eyes. Can't say they were a tremendous success though, from memory. |

| Re: Quick Tip Just to add to this thread and not "Hijack" it, one of the best varnishes to use is the water based "Seymo" rod varnish as it "soaks" in and if you get it on your fingers just rub them together and wash off under the tap before it dries. This varnish gets right into the thread and is brilliant stuff. To put a neat shiny head on it, then finish off with a coat of "Hard as Nails" nail varnish. (Looks very pretty and smells nice) The best super glue to use is called "Zap a Gap" Cheers |
