Cool "Blue" Trout fishing

Hi Guy's,

Just thought I would let you know how I got on in the Fly fishing Comp on Sunday.

My fly fishing partner and I came 2nd and we caught stack loads of trout all rainbows, but I had a wonderful surprise on the day.

I caught a "Blue" Trout...never had one before so it was a first for the "Bearded Burbler" ! And it tasted fabulous.....with just a squeeze of lemon and a touch of freshly chopped dill.

I hooked and lost a monster Brownie that my partner estimated to be in the region of 6.5lbs it was my second to last cast of the day............on a dry fly! Klinkhammer to be precise. But it took me all the way down to the backing of my fly reel in about 20 seconds! I played him right up to the bank...kneeling to net him after a good scrap.....and then....ping! The hook pulled out before I could bank him and claim first prize..........

Still that's fishing for ya....

You will be able to view the fish when admin clears the piccy.

Re: "Blue" Trout fishing

Well done Smoothy - what a good day. Shame about the one that 'got away'; but that's fishing and sometimes life itself

Our little 32 acre lake has/is being stocked and opens 19th March. Been closed for three long weeks. They stock with 'blues' amongst the rainbows and those are considered the prize fish. Scrap like hell and taste superior to rainbows; as you say.

I understand the blue is a hybrid of rainbow/sewin hence the pinker better tasting flesh.

Looking forward to the FFC and you coming over and hopefully catching some blues on our local pond and bass from the estuary; all in a day .
Wow - that's a challenge - game if you are ?

Thanks Fluff, can't wait for our little river to open in April and do some serious fishing...you know scrambling through undergrowth to cast to a fish under the far bank hidden by tree roots!

Oh yes Bass and Blues in one day....definately up for that....would be rude not to make the effort.

On the FFC I think after the Easter break would be a good time, need to check my diary and make sure.

Nice fishing Shaun. Never heard of a blue trout so I'd love to see the pic. Wicked mate.

Kiwi.

I've heard of the Bluey, but never seen or caught one. Didn't know that it was a cross between a sea-going brownie and a rainbow though.

Would I be right in thinking that as a result of this cross its non-reproducing ? Which for that matter makes me wonder what a 'triploid' rainbow is ? - understand them to be non-reproducing.

Congrats on the competition by the way, Smoothy. I'm impressed by your bag, if it was Sat 12th. I was out on a little lake after trout on that day and it was chilly and very slow fishing. Had a few 'nibbles' but failed to connect with much more than a cold.

A 'triploid' is so called because it is a fast growing triple chromosome fish

Their sex genes are destroyed whilst still at the ova stage of development, with the result being a fish that is sterile but never looses condition.

The triploid's appearence is that of a normal trout and until recently have been rainbow's. However they have now developed a triploid 'Brownie' which are all female but don't breed with the natural stock.

The blue is easily recognised having a broad blue coloured lateral line - not blue all over as some people expect.

I've never caught a 'tiger' trout which again are stocked in the UK and are marked like a tiger. I'd imagine they should fight well
