Angry Re: First time Fly Fisher

I went to Kingfisher Lake just past Bromyard on the A44 from Worcester. As it was my first time I used their equipment/tackle etc as I will do again tomorrow. As I said the Bransford Lake is no more than 5 minutes from me so I will go there. Other than 'buzzer' which I used to good effect last week, I'm not sure what the other terms you refer to mean....

Out of interest where did you go?.

Ok,we might well try there this year, somewhere different to try out. When using buzzers, you can literally leave them out and let them/it just drift around on the breeze,no need to do any retrieve, just watch the line closely. At Bransford, the water is very deep in places and on blisteringly hot days the fish can be well down in around 15 feet or more of water.A sinking line or a floater with a sinktip will let you get down to where the fish are easily. One tip,if you try a sinking line,do not try lifting lots of line off to re cast, you will be courting disaster with a possible busted rod.Quite often at Bransford the brownies will be caught deep, and he puts some decent sized fish in.Damn decent boozer just down the road as well,Bank's beer and the food is brill.
If you can get over to Delbury Hall at Diddlebury,do so,its a cracking spot.Fish are generally only around 1.5lb on average, but they stock blues and golds as well as the rainbows.

Re: First time Fly Fisher

Will save that info. Thanks very much. Any advice appreciated at the moment. Off on my second trip to the lake tomorrow so hopefully will pick up a bit more info. One question you may be able to answer? I naively assumed most fly fishing was done on dry flies but it appears to be the opposite. Is that right?

If the fish are taking from the surface, dries are a great way to take them. However they are caught at all depths on all sorts of flies from damn greatt lures to tiny dry flies.Have a good day,let us know how it goes.

Hi. Well not a good day. Blanked. But I still enjoyed myself. Also nipped into Bransford on way home and can see what you mean about it. With the pool sizes my lack of casting experience won't hinder me as much as at current venue.

Re: First time Fly Fisher

I was in a similar position as you a few months back. Used to be an avid maggot drowner, but haddn't fished for about 20 years - too many other tings getting in the way.

Snapped up the offer of a chance to go fly fishing, and was hooked right away (no pun inteted) so much so, that I managed to pursuade the Mrs that I NEEDED my own rod etc. Only landed two the first time, which were very tasty.

Biggest problem is the two lakes we have been using in this area close for fly fishing from end of May until October. Real shame as I was just getting into it, and finding my casting was feeling better and better each time. So have dusted off my coarse rods and have been having some fun with perch and roach.
