Pheasant Feathers

Hello I have just found a dead clck pheasant in the lane here, he is in excellent condition ( other than being dead of course) could anyone tell me exactly what feathers and from where on the bird should I take off for fly tying use, also maybe even tell me what each of the feathers from it are used for. Reb . . .

the tail is probably the best, but you may be able to use the wings too. i'm pretty new to this as well. hopefully someone else may know for sure.

Re: Pheasant Feathers

Hi RP, did you try CPR on the pheasant at all? The only parts I use, are the long tail feathers, for Pheasant Tail Nymphs, tails for Hare`s Ear Nymphs and the tippet (neck just below the crest)for -Pennels, Claret Bumbles, Peter Ross etc. Good find, should keep you going for a while. Oh the neck crest for tails for Dunkeld, Kate McLaren, Golden Olive Bumble etc

Hi rebelPeter,
The most important thing about useing any road kills or any furs off

mates is treating them for bugs. I tend to put mine in a sealed bag
in the freezer for a couple of days , with out the misses knowing mind.
They can infest the rest of your fly tying stuff ive learnt the hard way.
Peter on the above post have mentioned what they can be used for
G ood luck on your fly tying you get abetter buzz catching fish on your own flys.

Jeff

Hi Peter I think I now see what to take off the Pheasant, yes they ought to keep me going I get loadsa heathers here really, I have lots of gear bought as a job lot most are not marked so I donno what they are for, but I was thinking I could put a posting on mentioning the ones that have names on , then maybe some of you expert boys can give me an idea whet they are used for in fly tying . So I will write some down and post them on here and hope I can find out what they are used for, if nobody minds that is . . . .

Ah now this is great advise and I would not have known this and I will freeze them as you suggest, yes I guess it is more of a buzz when you catch on your own flies, I have not got to the actual tying yes as such I am still trying to get as much info on it and I have watched the utube vids, and least now I have a slight idea on a few simple flies. Thankx . . .

Re: Pheasant Feathers

keep these feathers in a bag with napthaline crystals this kills any bugs. You can get them at any fishing shop that does tying stuff.
