Book Recommendations

Hi Everybody.
As i am new to fly fishing,at the weekend i blanked, not for the first time since i started, but i couldn't understand what i was doing wrong. At this fishery (Press Manor),there were only the three of us out there. It was cool in the morning, but in the afternoon the fish were rising.I must have tried 15 flies during the day and only had two pulls. This old boy (no offence meant if he reads this),caught 12 fish. All he said to me was that he had fished since the 70's,thats 40 years comp ared to my 4 months.I know that you can't buy experience,so can anybody recommend a book to me that covers tactics, presentation and how to read the water. There are thousands of books out there but which do i choose?.
Many thanks Pete.

I am also a new boy to this but I think the experts on here will agree if I suggest "The Fly Tying Bible" . . Jack . . .

Re: Book Recommendations

It's unlikely that the fish were rising to flies at this time of year. Nymphs such as the damselfly nymph fished deep & very slow should catch you fish. There's loads of good fly fishing books on the market, so it's hard to reccomend any particular one. You may get more up to date info by subscribing to a trout fishing magazine such as Trout & Salmon or Trout fisherman. There information will be seasonal too. You will also learn a lot by joining a local club.

Re: Book Recommendations

Hi Guys, regarding my book recommendations,i did get one,"Trout from small stillwaters" by Peter Cockwill.
A very enjoyable, easy to read book.As a beginner i found it quite easy to follow and understand.Peter Cockwill seems to be a very accomplished all round angler, and there are also some great photographs.
