| Congrats on the fish, what did she weigh or did I miss that bit? Come spring I'll be having a bash myself on my local small river (30'-50' wide). It only holds a very small head of pike, but it's always worth a go. Most average 6lb and a biggie goes just into double figures, so it should be fun. I've had shed loads of coarse fish on the fly especially chub & perch. Chub especially can put up a strong fight on light weight kit. It's refreshing not only to read about game species on a fly forum. |

Mid-summer last year I got fed up with blanking on stocked troutstillwaters and so tried a couple of venues for alternative finned fighters - lake carp, barbel on a river, mixed species lakes and was amazed at the results. Not in the catching - it was mostly blankety blank I admit, but in the surprise (and sometimes almost disbelief and anger) from the ticket issuers. I wondered if they expected me to take their precious carp and start barbecue-ing at the side of the lake or something. What was interesting however was how supportive and interested the other bait anglers that I met were. Through forums like this I've seen that there are quite a few who also try for a non-salmonid on the fly and that's been very encouraging too. If anyone's interested, there's quite a good American book called 'Carp on the fly' (Brad Befus and John Berryman) (I got mine from Am*zon) and also 'Beyond Trout' (mostly species that we don't have here though) and 'Pike on the Fly' in the same series. Best wishes for big fishes.. ![]() |

| Hi Miles, This season I am trying for Perch and Carp of the fly. Perch I think I have the patterns to fish, Also will try for Chub in the upper reaches of the Bristol Avon, again I have patterns for this species.... But..... Carp.....I might have to resort to tying "Dog Biscuit" or "Pellet Fly" patterns to be in with a chance. I have some thinking to do about this ....unless anyone has any ideas I could try? __________________ Eventually all things merge into one, and a River runs through it. | Re: Pike on a Fly How about just casting out a bit of bread crust on a suitable size hook with your fly rod or isn't that in the spirit of fly fishing? |
