Fly Reel Winding Direction Am I correct in saying that a fly reel winds in the opposite direction to a "normal" reel? Reason I ask is I belive the line should pass 'over' the spool, instead of under. If I do this it means winding bacwards (clockwise when viewed on spool side).

Re: Fly Reel Winding Direction which way is the drag set, normally if you are right handed, the drag is set for you to wind anti clockwise, so if you try to wind clockwise you will be winding against the drag.

Re: Fly Reel Winding Direction Hi Mark, line is always retrieved at the bottom of the reel, a left hand wind, will retrieve the line winding anti-clockwise (looking at the handle face) and clockwise for a right hand wind. Most decent reels, the drag can be changed from left to right and vice-versa and if new, will include instructions on how to do it. Most tackle dealers will be able to help, maybe for a small fee, or for free, or try your make and model on you tube, you never know. Peter ![]()
