Floating or Sinking Line

I have a couple flyfishing questions for y'all. This will be my first year of flyfishing and I can't wait. I just got my first flyrod and flyreel, and the reel has sinking line on it. I'm planning on getting floating line anyways, but I was wondering which works better, floating or sinking line? Is there much difference or does it usually depend on the particular angler on what they prefer to use or maybe depend on weather/water conditions?

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

Depends where the fish are feeding, if they are deep down sinking is needed and floating for surface feeding. At least that's my simplistic understanding, Smoothie will probably give more detailed advice at some point. Also, the sinking lines are available at different sinking rates dependany on how fast you want to get the fly down.

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

Thanks Pross, I was sort of thinking about that when I was sending out that message, about going with sinking line if the bottom is where they're biting.

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

I only use a sinking line when fishing deep water (10feet or more).
For anything shallower I use floating or intermediate lines.
If you use a floating line with a longish leader/tippet,you can control the depth you are fishing, by using flies of various weights.

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

Cool bigfish, I meant to ask in my last post but forgot to was if there was a certain depth where floating line would work better then sinking line, like five foot or ten foot or whatever.

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

Are you fishing places like Indian creek or are you going out on Lake Erie?

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

I might do some flyfishing along the western shoreline of Lake Erie, but I'm mainly going to target the Raisin River and Huron River in Monroe County, MI.

Re: Floating or Sinking Line

Bigfish, thanks for the link. I've been googling and didn't stumble on that site. Googling is what helped me find this website. Thanks again for the link.
Smoothie, the one river I'm thinking of trying, the Raisin River, I don't think get's much deeper then 12-15 feet when you're in the city of Monroe, MI. I know its fairly shallow, like deep enough you can wade from one side of the river to the other, once you get west of Monroe in a town called Dundee, MI. I'll have to print this page up and use it when I'm getting there this spring.
