droppers help

im new to fly fishing and have recently started fishing with one dropper on my cast.
i usually tie on my dropper with a 3 turn water knot and have the dropper between 4 and 6 inches in length. more often than not when i check my flies before recasting the dropper is wrapped around the main leader only allowing the dropper to "drop" about an inch or so.
is there a way to stop this? am i using the wrong knot? or is it my casting?
any advice would be much appreciated

Hi, there are 3 things you can try, :-

1) reduce the length of your dropper to about 4-6 inches.
2) Use a leader ring.
3) Instead of a water knot, try a figure of 8 loop.(I use this knot all the time now for droppers).

Peter.

Don't get hung up on it it mate, its not the end of the world, tell ya what i do's!
due to not wanting to line the pockets of spec savers anymore i struggle to tie a dropper knot, now all I do is tie a very fine link knot, which is in all, probably stronger knot, it has never failed, look at joining two length's of nylon together,on the end result you will have two pieces hanging down on the finish, pick the one that is pointing back to the rod end, hey presto, there is your dropper, you should find less tangles with this method, unless you are trying to punch out half a mile. When you tie this, over exagerate the lenghth of the nylon for the desired effect. hope this helps?

Re: droppers help

Thanks for the link to the site SP and Captain for the sound advice. I'm fishing in Lochs just now, also looking for advice on what type of line and leaders I should be using. Not sure what I have on just now as it just happened to be in my old dads fishing bag.

MD

I'm out of my depth now mate...loch fishing hmmmmm, I wish, none of them down these parts, the only suggestion which is probably sound, is, if there's an old guy fishing beside you with a flat cap and is casting a fly line to infinity it would be a good idea to go and have a chat with the fella, I have never had any flyfisherman tell me to sod off and mind your own business, Generally everyone is too Happy to help....just like this forum, if that fails which it won't seek some more advice and post in the location you are on this forum, might yield more results...good luck, tight lines!
