Twaite Shad

Has anyone ever fished for this species? I hadn't heard of them until today but apparently my local river is one of only 3 in the country that they migrate up at present. Apparently they are related to the herring as is the tarpon and can put up an excellent fight for their weight. I'd be interested to hear a bit about when they travel upstream and any other information as I quite fancy catching a rarish fish.

Re: Twaite Shad

Seen a programme on them, they were catching shads on spinners and flies looked well fun, they're quite a nice looking species. I think it was around summer time they were fishing, but don't hold me to that..

Re: Twaite Shad

Thanks guys, as with all my fish if I hook one it will go back. I return most of my fish as soon as they take my bait and before they take the hook come to think of it. Read a bit more on them, they migrate upstream between April and June. The Usk where I'll be fishing, the Wye and another river (think it was the Towi) are the only known breeding rivers in the UK although non-breeding fish are found in several rivers as far north as Scotland. Apparently these fish are the reason that the Usk barrage couldn't be built, anglers objected about salmon not being able to get upstream and a fish pass was proposed but the shads can't jump and as part of their protected status no works can be built that prevent them from reaching their spawning grounds. I'll have to have a word in Sweets tackle shop to see if they can be fished for, there's nothing about fishing on the Usk that the lady in there doesn't know!

Re: Twaite Shad

Well, here is the info I found on this fish

http://www.jncc.gov.uk/ProtectedSite...eIntCode=S1103

So it does exist! Are you saying kippers aren't a species? Better not send of my email to Richard claiming to have caught one for the species hunt then had I?
