| Nothing at the end of my rainbow As the world’s greatest caster of the fly rod NOT, A forum met was being held at Sutton Bingham. And with Dognobbler going I thought that this would be the ideal opportunity to learn from the master himself. So 7:00am Saturday the 27th March saw me picking up the master himself. An hour later we were at the venue waiting for the other members of the forum to arrive. Jolly Piscator and JustMark turned up just past 9am closely followed by Greenheart and Jerry Two Jackets. After everyone got there rods out and reels were sorted it was time for Dognobbler to start his teaching. Pete {Dognobbler} took us down to the reservoir to grassed area for some basic casting lessons. ![]() Ian {Greenheart} at this point wondered of to search for the fish. After a while Pete told us that we ready and to go looking for the fish. So off we went following the same path as Ian. As we arrived on the bank and finding Ian we settled into our swims, my first cast was perfect the only one of the day, but perfect and on the retrieve whilst fishing a weighted nymph the hook went straight into a snag, as the hook came free it went straight into another snag from there into the bank catching the reeds in front of me. After sorting out that mess the wind decided to pick up, and casting was a complete nightmare. On looking at the lake I noticed that the wind seemed calmer on the far Bank, and with only being a beginner, I thought it might be better to fish that side, JustMark and Jerry Two Jackets agreed with me so off we went in search of a rainbow. Once we got round to the other side we found the conditions a lot better and at least we were casting in front of our selves. However, with Mark the only one with a follow, we stuck in the area for a couple of hours. Jerry Casting ![]() Mark Casting ![]() We then thought about re-joining Ian and the rest who were still fishing the wind end of the lake. Once we had found them Ian informed us that both Peter and he had caught but JP like us had not. We stuck it out until 4pm, when I received a phone call from home and I needed to be back. Both Ian and Pete caught their five fish limit and with Pete winning the day with the heaviest amount. Ian’s Rainbow ![]() Peter Receiving his prize ![]() It was hard work in the wind and as beginner I know I need lots of practise to cast that fly with distance and accuracy. There may have not been any gold at the end of this rainbow, but I know there will be one day. __________________ Born to fish made to work |

| Re: Nothing at the end of my rainbow While Jerry, Steve and I were sheltering with the wind behind us Pete was casting straight out into it at the other side of the lake. The laws of physics meant there was an inevitable outcome due to the effect of wind on a large body of water. Hydro physicists call this effect 'waves' and Pete got a beauty which filled his wellies. For the last hour he was wandering around with geysers spouting out of the top of his boots with every step. Until he sat on the steps of the lodge to finally pour most of the water out I bet he was glad to get back to the car to change. Thanks again for a great day guys. ![]() __________________ I am in shape. ROUND is a shape! |
