Low cost fly rod for learning flyfishing

I am teaching someone how to fly fish the rivers of Colorado. He has limited funds for rod and reel. I have been blessed with owning Orvis and Loomis equipment and I do not have any idea what direction to point him in the purchase. I have noticed cheaper packages in Cabelas and Bass Pro but know nothing about them. Ideas would be very much appreciated!

I bought starter set-ups for my fiancee and I from LL Bean. Prices were great, and I've had them checked out by some very experienced fly fishermen who were astounded by the price to quality ratio

No problem. I'm quite happy with mine. Was ideal for learning to cast, and I've caught trout on it, so I know it works!!!

THe other nice thing with LL Bean is their warranty. If he gets it and doesn't like it for any reason, even after using it, they'll take it back no questions asked.

Never heard of LL Bean but I use Orvis, Daiwa and Hardy rods.

Cn't reccommend Daiwa enough, Made in Scotland very user friendly especially for beginners.

They make Salmon, Trout and Saltwater Rods in lots of weights and lengths. I even use their fly rods for Pike and Saltwater fishing.

LL Bean is a big mail-order retailer in the US. A lot of what they do now is more clothing oriented, but they do have a big fishing catalog. Not quite on par with Orvis for quality, but less expensive and excellent quality for the cost.

Hey, Orvis' original headquarters and rod-making facility are only about an hour and a half from me in Manchester, VT. It's a fun but dangerous trip...
