Rhymney river through the old pit.

walked along the river rhymney today from pengam to Brittania were there use to be the pit Brittania collery.
The water use to be black with coal dust,
now the only sygn of the mines is the orange in the odd place on the banks spreading down the river in certain parts. This i believe is the pits flooding under gound and once in the river kills all invertabray in that section of river.

Some of my favorite pools are here,

a couple damsels were hatching there this morning

No grayling up this far , but you can have great fun on the dry fly and nymphs for th wild browns.

Flyman

Wont be long till the start of the season 1st of march. Can you fish that stretch anytime mate. Nice flies. My favourite fly is the gold head hares ear size 16. Hope i catch my pb wild brownie or bigger this year @ 2lb 12oz. The club record in our river which is 12 miles long big agivey is 7lb 10oz, that would be nice. Cant wait.

Hi Flyman.
looks like a nice strech for brownies? about 10 years ago we had a simular problem with are river. up near the spring of the river there was a mine and it to was causing this orange sedement problem. Until they built a treatment plant to stop it. in just a few seasons the trout moved almost 3 miles up the river closer to the spring and they are still their every year since. I think the orange stuff is iron ore? TOXIC!

Hi Jaff, not sure how long the club has been going, but I was told that river between the walls down opposite the caple pub no one owns. I will not be at our meeting on that date, I will be in Barbados.
