| First on Fly Was fishing at Lakeside Fisheries near Wymeswold for rainbows (on the top lake) when I saw a fish routing around and putting up a cloud of silt, though I could'nt see what it was. So I cast this gold headed nymph ![]() a few feet behind it and twitched it back. As soon as the nymph went into the cloud of silt, the line went tight and after a decent fight I netted my first ever carp on the fly. Chuffed to bits. Cheers ![]() ![]() |

| Re: First on Fly Fly fishing for 'coarse' fish is a sadly neglected side of the sport. I have had many a wonderful, and cheap session in the evening using a fly called a super bonio for carp at a local fishery, as a two fish ticketis normal starting at about ten pounds or higher, and an evening on this lake is three, a I save money, b I have a great time fishing. Perch are good fun to have on a 5-6 weight rod, as are jack pike. If you fancy it, try dry fly fishing for rudd. |

| Re: First on Fly Quote:
To be honest, the majority of my fishing is for coarse species' as I seldom have time to fish for more than a couple of hours at a time, and don't fancy paying twelve quid or so to fish my local (Foremark res) for a couple of hours. So far I've had perch, roach, chub, pike, and the one carp. And I fish with a four weight for them (not the pike though!!), and even the tiny perch and chub put on a great show for the four weight! I am still trying to get a tench, if anyone has any tips for fly choice, would be appreciated. Cheers |

| Re: First on Fly I would suggest a bloodworm pattern, but you have to cast to them. I'm not sure if they are impulse feeders, like perch, ie snapping at passing food. I have had carp on a bright pink dog nobbler! So they might. I did hear about some tench being caught on a dry fly at Weir Wood resevoir in the mid '80's, the angler who reported it was, I thik unlkely to BS people. Other than bloodworm patterns a nymph would be my guess. |
