Another Big Trout Completes The Treble!

I paid Avington another visit today and ended up fooling another big trout. This time it was a Blue which tipped the scales at 14lb 08oz and sort of completed an interesting "treble" for me:



It took almost two hours of careful watching and casting to eventually fool this one but it eventually fell to a #14 black/orange stalking bug. The fight was incredible and gave me several heart stopping moments as I managed to get tangled up in overhanging branches and it collected a stack of weed on its travels.

I didn't broadcast the fact but back at the end of July, I set myself the target of a double figure trout. Having completed that and more a couple of weeks ago, I sort of extended that target to add a big "Blue" to the Rainbow and Brown already "in the bag". I didn't expect to achieve that target so quickly!



So now I can return to blanking on the rivers!

I used a 9ft, 4 piece, 6 weight rod matched to a #6 WF floating line and a short (9ft) leader of 7lb Incognito Fluoro. A bit under gunned for these big trout but I'm confident with the balanced gear. The blue fought really well, it's acceleration was staggering.

Todber is a cracking venue but I can't make the meet! I did go on the 2007 meet, had an excellent time in top class company but didn't catch (hence the Username!). "Bivvy fishing" is not really my style (I had to borrow 99% of the gear!) but I had a great time thanks to the guys and gals on this forum. I'm sure it will be another fine social meet and hopefully the cats will put in an appearance.

Interesting question! I'm sure it has but there are not that many venues around with fish of that quality/size. Most big trout venues stock rainbows. Avington and Dever Springs add a few Browns and Blues but in the case of Avington, for their really big fish, I guess the ratio is 1 brown for every 15 rainbows and perhaps 1 blue for every 30 rainbows.

Avington produces between 10 and 25 "doubles" per month, August has been a very good month!

The stock ponds at Avington are right alongside the main office and shop with the "big" fish just the other side of the small fence. It's quite a sight to see these fish close up with a few well into the low 20's! Of that stock, there are usually 2 or 3 browns and maybe 1 or 2 blues cruising around with the big chunky rainbows.

I see you got really hooked on the fluff chucking again.....suppose the river fishing is out of the question still, at least for a while?!
