New to fly fishing Hi everyone, another newbie to flyfishing. I've recently come over from Aus to live here and am desperatley missing my fishing. I'm use to beach fishin in Sydney but have always been keen to try fly fishing for trout. I've finally purchased a rod and some basic tackle to get me started and I am now after some much needed advice on how to go about things from here. I'm not really looking to join clubs or get tution or any thing fancy just yet. All I'm aiming to do is have a bit of fun. I'm confident I will be able to cast with a bit of practice but as far as specailist tactics and tackle I have no idea. I'm a bit confused on which type of flies I want to be using and things like that. My gear was cheap from The Range, as I said I'm no professional fly caster. Some datails: Location: I would prefer to fish a river/stream. I'm not particularly keen on these ponds you have in this country. I live in Market Weighton which is near York. I think Driffied is the nearest Trout stream and if so has any one fished there before? Target species: Trout I supose Rod: This is where I get confused. It called 'Fladen Vantage Fly' 270cm / 9' Aftma 6. So is this a 6 weight rod then? The other thing is it seems very long. 4 pieces. Not sure if this is good or bad Reel: 5/7 I'm assuming that is the weight range again. Reel seems ok actually. Fly: I've bought a pack of wet flies but I'm not sure if I need dries or nymphs? Rig: As far as backing/fly line and leader go. For backing I've just put about 50m of 3kg mono fishing line. Thats probably totally wrong but I couldn't get hold of any nylon backing and I don't plan on getting down to the backing any way. Fly line must be ok cause it was £20 which I'm assuming should do the job. Then 2kg leader. Not sure how long to make it and what knots are used for joining fly line to mono. Then fly wet or dry. As I said I won't be dissapointed if I don't catch anything but I just need to get out there and have a go. Any thoughts or ideas or advice would be a great start for me. Thanks very much Nathan. P.S. No more Ashes jokes please!

Re: New to fly fishing Really you would be better to contact a local tackle shop that specialises in fly fishing tackle in your area who will put you right. It will cost you about £60 for 2 hours with a professional instructor who will not only sort out your casting, he will advise you on the type of gear you will need for the type of trout fishing you want to do. I was out your way for two months earlier this year to see my son, who is now an Australian get married. He lives in Cronulla by the way. I caught a variety of species in the sea whilst I was there, including whiting and yellow tailed kingfish. I also took a trip up to Exmouth in WA where we caught all sorts of species including Spanish Mackerel, queenfish and many diffent species of reef fish. But go and speak to a pro. You can contact someone in your area by googling Stanic. And don't decry the small stillwaters, there are some in your area that are very attractive and they couple also help you a lot. Go and give it a try. No worries mate.

Re: New to fly fishing What a classic. It's a small world. I still have my house in Cronulla. Use to spend hours on the beach chasing Jewfish which are bloody big a silver looking beasts. Better stop there before I shed a tear. Thatnks for the advice. Nath

Hi everyone! I'm James and I will start fly-fishing this year. I already bought some equipment but especially the range of fly fishing reels is confusing me... One of my mates recommended Z-Reels (http://www.z-reels.de/home.html) but before buying one I'd just like to make sure that it is the right choice.. Does anyboby know Z-Reels? Any experience? Any comments? Anybody knows where I can buy them in the UK? Thanks for your help.. James
