| Embarassing question ![]() Hello, ive recently started flyfishing, i have been about 5 times with my father-in-law. Im doing ok, ive managed to catch something every time . Anyway, i thought the time had come to buy my own gear, so ive been to the shop and brought everything the bloke said i would need. The problem is, i havent got a clue how to set it all up. How much backing line do i need? what is the best way to tie the fly line onto the backing line? I feel such a n00b asking this but ive just had the rod handed to me all set up and ready to go until now ![]() |

| Re: Embarassing question We've all been there! I've only just re-joined the fly fishing lark after nearly 30 years so things have changed a bit and I've learnt a lot in the last couple of months. The business end - The Leader - you can buy tapered mono leaders in all sorts of sizes. Typically 3 meters long tapering down to quite a fine point. Thick and heavy at the "top end" they usually have a loop which is often coloured coded to the weight of the leader. That loop can be joined to your fly line by way of a braided loop. These come in many different guises but are threaded and usually superglued to your fly line, the leader loop is attached to this by way a loop to loop "knot". We used to use a "nail knot" or a "needle knot" but these braided connectors are far better and easier. Backing to fly line - Good question! I've had mine set up by the shop I bought the gear from. It looks like a simple blood knot with a dab of super glue. In any event, it's quite important as when you hook that fish of a lifetime and you see the fly line ripping off the reel you want to be certain of a good connection to the backing!!!! I would strongly suggest a trip to a decent shop for the advice and perhaps actual set up, most would be happy to do it. Alternatively specialist websites such as www.flyforums.co.uk have proven invaluable for me! Tight lines. __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |
