New to Fly fishing Hello everyone, just joined the forum and i'm after some advice. I plan on getting a fly rod to take advantage of some marvellous places to fish in Northumberland. After numerous searches i have decided to go for either the Grey's GRXi (9'6" 7/8 weight) or the Sonik 4, again 9'6" and 7/8 weight - Any thoughts or can someone come up with a better rod in the price bracket. Cheers. ![]()

Re: New to Fly fishing The first thing I would do is get some instruction, take a look at the AAPGAI website. The biggest hurdle in fly fishing is learning how to cast properly, also the instructor will give you recommendations on gear. As for the rods you have mentioned, they are good choices. However I would go with the #6/7 rather than the #7/8 size. The reason is quite simple, dual rated rods tend to load better with the higher of the two line ratings. In this case a #6/7 rod will load much more quickly with a #7 line, whereas a #7/8 rod will load more quickly with a #8 line. Anything over #7 is a bit too heavy for most trout fishing in my experience. For reels and lines, you don't need to pay vast sums of money. There are some very good reels for under £50 out there and I know of a few places where you can get good quality lines for about £20. For starting out you will only need a floating line, once you progress you can start to use intermediates and sinkers.

Re: New to Fly fishing Thanks mate, it's appreciated. When you look at all the different lines, reels and rods your head starts to spin - so much nice gear to choose from before you even get your feet wet.

Re: New to Fly fishing Welcome to the forum, What are you going to be fishing for mate and what kind of water i,e river trout or small still water rainbows or on reservoir's could make a difference to my suggestions, but with the deals you can get on grays rods these days you wont go far wrong. One thing I will say is although iv got many rods Sage, Loomis, St.Croix, Hardy and Grays oh and Beulah 9 times out of 10 I use a spring creek 7# three piece that I got from Ebay for £20 casts a dream and no big worry if you happen to break it. good luck mike next question lines wf floater from Beulah and wf slow glass and a fortyplus di3 from airflo reel grays grxi with spare spools

Re: New to Fly fishing Thank you, I will be mainly fishing reservoirs and private still waters for trout. After Looking at the Gary Evans site they have a Grey's grxi combi for 172.00 which is a cracking price so i think i will go for that.
