Carp on the Fly.... Fullcreel had been telling Bananna Steve & I for ages that we should try a fishery that he fishes on a regular basis & where the carp will freely rise to a fly (Higher Farm, Nr Bruton in Somerset). So yesterday afternoon Steve & I thought we would give it a go. The fishery consists of three small lakes that are stocked with a good head of carp & various silver fish species including Orfe ( Memo to self to try again here for the species hunt) First impressions were not good. Maybe it was not a good idea to go on a bank holiday, but when we arrived, most of the pegs were full. There were also a lot of very noisy kids running about all over the place. However a few dig biscuits & bits of bread thrown onto the water soon had enough carp rising to whet out appetites, so we decided to give it a go. I set up a little 6 weight Orvis rod & floating line & tied on a deerhair fly, clipped to resemble a dog biscuit. Things were not as easy as we hoped. We both had lots of takes, including from Carp that were up into double figures, but they were extremely difficult to hook. We had arranged to meet up with Fullcreels fishing partner JP & he arrived about an hour after Steve & I. Conditions were hard with a very cold wind, but I started to pick up a few small fish.It was Steves first attempt at fly fishing, but the wind was not helping him. Fullcreel paid us a visit, but was unable to fish due to family commitments. However he did show up a few hotspots on the top lake which was no longer so crowded. JP & I were soon into better fish, which gave a good account of themselves on the light gear... JP playing a good carp My beat Carp We fished on until about 8pm, when the cold got the better of us. Sadly Steve failed to catch in the difficuly conditions, but it had been a learning curve for both of us & I think we shall both be trying for carp on the fly again soon. We rounded the day of with a pint in a nice little country pub & in my case, an extra large Doner Kebab with chips & loadsa chilli sauce... ![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...

Re: Carp on the Fly.... Nice one Ian, I will have to get the fluff chucking gear out again to give it another go.....and catching carp on the fly sounds like fun, that is if you can hook them and I'm not very good at that yet lol __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: Carp on the Fly.... One thing I should say, is that i use a much shorter leader when fishing for carp, as they tend to spit out artificial biscuits. I popped by and had a couple of casts with JP's rod, bagging a 2-3lb common, which I think upset someone he he he
