M27 , then M3 then A34, then M4 then M32 junction 1 my house 1hr.45mins..... 2 hour casting lesson ...... then more than 30feet! To cast more than 30 feet.... which isn't bad for the novice caster you need to understand the dynamics of the cast. The fly line is a bit like a tank track, looks slow on the bottom, but the top is whizzing round. This is what you need to replicate in the casting loop. Less effort more technique = more distance. Strip 40-50 feet of line off the reel, hold the line in your non casting hand and keep it there! If you release any line on the back or forward cast you will lose line speed. Line speed is everything for distance casting. Start the cast at 7oclock lift to 10-10.30 then from 10-10.30 accellerate the back cast to the 12-12.30 position your thumb should be level with your eye/ear like holding a phone, this will send the line high up behind you....let the line unfurl behind you counting one two.... then launch the forward cast...keeping your elbow tight to your body... if not you will increase the arc of the loop.... called open loop.... you want a nice tight loop remember the tank track??. Don't break your wrist on the back cast as the line will fall behind you and open the loop too much. Try to keep the whole thing smooth.... no jerky actions as this is transferred to the rod and fly line. Its all a question of timing... at the optimum point....circa 11.00 O'clock stop the rod momentarily and let the line unfurl in front of you... when you see the line start to straighten out release it from your non casting hand... the speed of the line will propel it forwards and you will get more distance. Try not to just get distance but get the technique right .... everything else will fall into place. Patience is a virtue and you need it to learn how to cast properley. Practice the technique... then we can move onto the single/double haul... which creates even more line speed for less effort. You just need to learn how to walk before you can run! I hope this "free" lesson helps. __________________ Eventually all things merge into one, and a River runs through it. Old Smoothy |Shoot and fish .com |Fishing Holidays | Fly Fishing Tuition |

| Re: novice fly fisher checked with smoothy on line weight he told it's a 7/8 my rod is a #fw9 would a change to a heavier line help me cast further? __________________ Rough seas = Ground baiting |

| Re: novice fly fisher Line weight needs to be balanced with the rod and reel but generally the heavier line should cast further although it also depends on the type of line weight forward etc. Depends what you are fishing for I suppose, if you are intending fly fishing in the sea only the heavy stuff is needed but you would sacrifice on distance and go for a lighter set up when you are fishing a venue that needs delicate fly presentation to avoid spooking fish. As with all types of fishing you can't get one rod that will do in all situations unfortunately! |

This is were the AFTM rod and line rating falls apart. I have a rod that is rated 6 but needs a #7 line to load it, conversely i have a rod that is rated 9 and it only needs a 7/8 to load it. Changing to a heavier line does help.... but as I have already stated.... it is the speed of the line that gives you distance.... get this right and you can cast with a broom stick with a few eyes whippe on! __________________ Eventually all things merge into one, and a River runs through it.
