Re: A bit of a beginner Suggest you use a tapered leader - these come in a range of sizes and taper down to some quite fine point bs. The taper also allows a much better roll over of the fly when you cast, helping to lay out the fly in a much better way. I fished with a 5lb point yesterday and today and had trout to 7lb+ quite comfortably. __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe

Re: A bit of a beginner I agree, use a tapered leader where possible, the energy transfer throughout the leader will turn the flies over when the water is flat calm. Use three-turn water knots to join the leader together, however if you want to join two different types of leader material together (such as fluorocarbon and co-polymer) then use metal leader rings such as the ones made by Riverge.

Re: A bit of a beginner I would ask what are you fishing for? If its small river browns then lighter than for rainbows if salmon heavier still. Being a comp fisherman I very rarely fish tapered leaders and for the past 35years found just the usual mono, co-polymer or fluorocarbon just as well. saying that at times a tapered leader can help with very fine presentation.
