Question Pike flies

Hi (merry christmas everyone)
I live near the Union canal in scotland,
and there are pike in it so i was wondering
if anybody knew any good pike flies suitable
for the canal or ones that are favoured for pike.
Thanks
Ali

Re: Pike flies

What you want are some large baitfish patterns that imitate fish such as roach and mackerel on size 4/0 and 6/0 hooks. Some other good patterns are pike bombers, again in bigger sizes. Remember to use a wire trace and hold on to your rod.

Re: Pike flies

Yes you do need a fly rod to cast a fly, you couldn't use a coarse fishing, pike or carp rod as they're too stiff and the action is wrong. Also you won't be able to turn the fly over properly.

Re: Pike flies

Sorry buddy I didn't read it properly. You could use a 7/8wt rod for smaller patterns but larger patterns would put too much strain on the rod and you may not be able to control the fish. I would recommend an 8/9 or even a 10 weight rod for pike.

Re: Pike flies

Re: Pike flies

You will need a wire trace, however never tie it directly to the braided loop as the force created when striking into a fish will create a cheesewire effect and will cut straight through your braided loop. Instead use a 2ft wire trace and an 8ft leader of 15lb clear mono or Seaguar or Rio fluorocarbon.

Larger zonkers might work but avoid anything too small, the aim of the game is to use large patterns that create disturbance in the water, which in turn attracts the pike.
