Re: ? Old Smooth

Hi Shaun.
That sounds like alot a fun. I have only fished with nymphs I have never fished with dry flies yet. I have a brass beaded nymph that I have great success with when fishing for trout. However I do have a few dry flies but have not used them yet.

Hi Bob,

Whenever you get the chance have a go at dry fly fishing... it's the best!

Cast upstream and put a wiggle in the line to stop the drag and watch them come up for it, heart stopping stuff !!! I usually try and match the hatch but if not exactly then about the same size and shape, usually does the trick.

Lovely fish Shaun. I've only ever fly fished once on still waters which is strange really as I had Llandegfedd and Talybont reservoirs within easy reach. Must get out and use my fly rod soon. Is there a closed season on still waters? Also, have you ever targetted carp on the fly as this was something I'd never even thought of before seeing it on TV recently.

Hi Shaun,
I have a few trout flies that are recommend for the region I live in eastern US. I have a few May flies, Black Gnat and Mosquito dry flies. Next time I go out and if the conditions are right, I will have to try and use them.

No closed season for "enclosed" still waters mate... most only close for Christmas day!

Have had plenty of fun trying to cast further out than the ice in the margins on Boxing day!! Lovely.

Normally Trout are not in prime condition during the depths of winter, they tend to be lean as they have not as much food source to choose from. So they tend to feed when the sun is warming the water and some fly life starts to happen. But on small stillwaters they stay fat as they tend to get caught quicker!

Hi Bob,

Great news. Glad to hear you are going to give dry fly fishing a go, you won't be disappointed. Just remember stealth.... drag free drift.... acurracy... =

I will try and post some pictures of some of my favourite dry flies if you are interested.
