Talking Fly Fishing - Today

Hi Bob,

Well the weather was really bad today, tough winds and raining hard... but what the hell, have not been fly fishing for a while..... and an invitation I could not refuse!

The lake was full of surprises, Browns, Rainbows and CARP! The lake was stocked some years ago with Carp and in the last 5-6 years with Trout by the previous owner, but my friend has only owned it for 18 months or so. Has not been fished for several years.

After getting a soaking with rain, I started to fish the deeper end of the lake, cast approx 15 yards, nice little nymph..... wham! First cast First fish, looking good! All went quiet after landing and releasing a 3lb Rainbow. 30 minutes later, wham again, this time the fish tore off and broke me on 6lb line.... maybe a carp. 10 minutes on another take, this time definately a good Rainbow, stayed shallow in the water then tail walked for 5-6 yards... A really big fish played it for 5-6 miutes landed him what a fish. Weighed him just a shade under 10lb... 2feet long.... Pal told me to take the fish, so obliged. More takes more fish, manner from heaven!

Result..... 16 fish, broken three times, no Browns, but have photo's will post when I can. The weather was so bad could not take them at the Lake, but photo is the fish on my garage floor.... sorry. Have tape next to them to show size of fish.
Will have them smoked by my local fish smoker, should taste lovely.

Can't wait until the next invite!

Re: ? Old Smooth

Hi Shaun,
Wow other then the bad weather Shaun I would say you had a great day. Can’t wait to see those photo’s. I love smoked trout to. This is the way I like to eat it. I like it with these condiments, chopped red onion, chopped hard-boiled egg, capers and creamy horseradish sauce and a good glass of wine.

Like I said other then the weather sounds like you had a great day fishing.

Bob

Thumbs up Re: ? Old Smooth

Hi guys,

Thanks. I don't know if the Lake has been stocked recently as he has owned it for circa 18 months , but the first trout had an extended belly, sure sign of pellet feeding. But my pal did say that his kids and friends have been chucking in bread and trout pellets for fun. (should have used a bread and pellet fly!)

So this might explain the extended bellies of one or two of the trout. All had full tails, which is another way of telling recent stock fish as they tend not to have them.

Hi Shaun,
Looks like a great catch Shaun. I expect when you get them back from your local fish smoker you will be dinning quite nicely.

Enjoy
Bob

Hi Bob thanks,

I think they should come back OK I have used him before and he's good at it.

I may try your ideas on sauces, they sound good.

Hi Bob,

What kind of flies do you use in general... do you use dry flies at all.. or just nymphs. I use lots of nymphs, mainly chironomid patterns or Baetis patterns. If I am fishing my local big reservoir i tend to use 4 flies on droppers. We fish it loch style from a drifting boat with a drogue out the back to slow us down.
Poinr fly can be size 12 buzzer (chironomid) middle dropper, size 14 hare's ear, top and bob flies anything but my favourite is a really skinny size 16 semi palmered fly because as you bring the flies back to the boat and "hang them" for a couple of seconds the Trout come up and turn away with the fly. Great to watch and then hang on for dear life!

Sometimes we drift right across the lake (circa 540 acres) and get takes at different areas, turn around and go back again! Hopefully catch more that way!

Its a great way to fish, we beach the boat and have a bottle of wine and something to eat midday and relax for a while before we start again.

Then have a beer on the way home.
