Re: starting out

Hi Rhys,

Like yourself I started fly fishing last year. After borrowing all the bits and pieces for my first couple of outings I plucked up the courage and bought a rod - reel - line - flys and a landing net. The rod & line that I bought was suitable for a lake rather than a river.

My suggestion to you would be to approach and ask the fishermen on the riverbank what type of rods and reels they use. There are so many different lengths and weights of rods all suitable for different kinds of fly fishing.

No doubt some of the fluff chuckers will be along to give you better advice than I can.

Regards

Drew

Re: starting out

You'll need a rod licence and also a permit from whoever owns the fishing rights. Sometimes the rights will be with the landowner who may only issue a few memberships / permits to fish his stretch, some stretches will be leased to a local angling association in which case you would have to join the Association to fish their stretches and others can be owned by a local council and you can buy day, week or season permits. If you are lucky it may be a section with no official system and the owner of the stretch of river might come to an informal arrangement with you or possibly even a free stretch although genuine free stretches are rare. Most stretches will have signs up saying private fishing and who owns the rights or your local tackle shop might be able to advise you.

Re: starting out

A lot of the South Wales rivers also contain Sea Trout & Salmon. If you intend to fish for these you will need an Environment Agency migratory fish Rod Licence. Details can be found on this link:

Re: starting out

Not sure if there's any Rainbow Trout in the Tawe. It's mainly known for it's Sea Trout & Salmon (Migratory Species). It also contains Brown Trout, which your licence covers you for.

Re: starting out

Hi Rys,
You have a license for brown trout, you are not allowed to take salmon or Sea trout on it. Id advise a 5/6 weight rod/reel cmbination, with a double tapered floating line to begin with. Small natural flies.Dont go for gaudy lures.
Youll need a landing net too. and a priest if you intend to take them to eat. Id advise crushng the barbs on your flies, if you intend to return the fish.

Good luck, Paul.
