Re: whos hooked thereselves in the head

its not too bad if you use barbless and small hooks
never done it fly fishing but i did have a size 1 sea fishing hook go through the side of my hand
when some idiot thought it would help untangling our lines by pulling his line as hard as he could
captain of the boat had to use pliers to cut the eye off the hook and pull it through
that came a bit keen just a matter of common sense and be careful and you wont get hooked
and most of all always wear eye protection

Always wear a Hat & polarised Glasses to protect your head & eyes mate. Also when possible try to cast with the wind from you left if you are right handed & the oposite if you are left handed especially if you are are a beginner or if you are boat fiahing. Another tip if you are boat fishing is to take great care when pulling in the anchor, as anchor ropes at commercial trout fisheries often have rusty hooks caught in them.... Ouch .... & yes, that I am someone who's learnt the hard way......
I can also remember going to the local hospital when I was a kid with with a large hook stuck in my thumb. The doctor decided that instead of trying to pull the barb out, he would use a nice sterile pair of surgical snips. However he did'nt count on fish hooks being made from tempered hardened steel & all that resulted was a pair of surgical pliars with a nice notch in their blades. He eventuall got a greasy rusty pair of pliars from his car tool kit & they did the job fine... LOL

Safety first, always wear a hat and glasses for protection. Like I was in my childhood days when a hook was stuck at my legs. It was a painful experience.

Smile Re: who's hooked thereselves in the head

Once, when fishing the Dart in Totnes this year, I managed to hook myself right in the middle of my back, just out of reach. Luckily, a rather lovely young woman had just moments before removed most of her clothes in order to sunbathe on the bank - if I'm honest, this was the distraction that caused me to mess up the cast in the first place - but she was gracious enough to remove the hook for me. After that, I had to make a conscious effort to keep my concentration firmly on my back cast...

Re: whos hooked thereselves in the head

i remember when i was about 9 , fishing at a small pond in southampton , stood behind a mate when he was casting (not fly) and wallop hook straight in my lip lol , so we cut the line and off i trotted to the hospital with a size 12 hook with maggots still attached in me lip , where they numbed the lip and pushed the hook right through and cut it , bloody painful just as well it wasnt him lol as his name was andrew pike now that would have been funny

Re: whos hooked thereselves in the head

To be honest I've been hooked everywhere but my head.
Size 14 in the knee
Size 10 in the arm
6/0 in the hand.
Saw one bloke fish a fly match with a great big fluffy thing in his throat, that was scary.
