Talking My first Fly fishing experience!!!

Hi all,

As I mentioned before, I wanted to take up Fly fishing for trout and having bought my gear from Rovers in Fareham on Friday I went up to Chiphall Trout Lake this morning. Having never fly fished before I was pretty nervous. My line came with a instruction DVD on how to cast which was a great help and after a practice session for 30 mins in a field on the way up to the lake, I got to grips with casting.

After spending 3 hours on the lake I can safely say i'm totally hooked! It was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go back. It wasn't at all easy as the fish weren't that intersted in the flies i presented, except the tiny ones which i luckily managed to avoid by selective stalking but after a while I managed to get a take from a nice rainbow and boy did it go! My girlfiend Jana was totally gobsmacked as neither of us thought i'd catch first time out particually as not much else was happening around the lake. I also caught a second fish an hour later which was harder to hook as it, and some of its friends, kept turning away from the fly after a quick inspection. A faster retreive turned its attention and then "fish on"! This one was a leaper, jumping out of the water 3 or 4 times. The fight from a trout is a lot different to the slow dogged scrap i'm used to with carp. They just don't give up and are so fast. Great fun on the light fly rod, my arm aching from the battle!

Pics below....5.5lb and 2.5lb.

James

Yeah it was my first time lol. If you'd been there you would have known that. One time I was false casting a few times before i even realised my fly was hooked in the reeds and not going anywhere . I must have changed my leader about 5 times as i kept smashing or knotting it up with bad casts and snags.
