large arbor fly reels

Hi all,
I recently bought a 7 - 8wt large arbor fly reel similar to Scierra XDP.
Beautiful reel but so heavy !!!, over 200g, about 8ozs. Compared that to the "old" type reel which is half that weight. Will the extra weight affects the action of rod -- it certainly affects me. So are the advantages of the large arbor outweighed by the extra weight. I know that the very expensive reels are much lighter but paying over £250 is out of my league.
Any thoughts on the subject ????.

Regards, DBM.

Thumbs up Re: large arbor fly reels

I've been using an Orvis Rocky Mountain wide arbour reel for a couple of seasons now & although it feels a lot bulkier than my older Battenkill reels, I don't really notice the difference when casting.

Re: large arbor fly reels

Today with my Sage Z-Axis I used my old Leeda LC reel weight with 8WF line 5ozs instead of the LA reel weight with line over 9ozs. It was, for me, a much "nicer" fishing experience and I also landed some (7) good sized Rainbows. One more advantage of the older cheaper reels. The only drag is the "click" and the finger on the line or rim of the reel. This gives the fish a chance of running also Its part of the joy's of fishing to hear the reel "screaming" and seeing the fish taking line. The newer more expensive reels have a smooth drag that stops the fish so your left with the fish doing cartwheels under the rod tip !!!!. What are your thoughts. Agree or not agree that is the question!!!!.
