Smile Sutton Bingham 14/04/07 the report...

Saturday dawned a beautiful morning. I got up at 7am (A lie in for me) & picked my fishing partner Pete up at about 8am. I should add that Pete is not my usual fly fishing partner, also called Pete, but a workmate who I’d not fished with before. He doe’s a lot of fishing in Canada, so I was hoping to learn a few new tips from him. We did think about going to Blagdon as we had heard it was fishing really well, but eventually decided to stick to our original plan. We arrived at Sutton Bingham around 9am

to find the lake shrouded in mist & already fairly crowded.
I drove Pete around the lake margins & pointed out a few of the features & hotspots, as he had not fished there before.

I'd never seen the water level so low here this early in the season.
We eventually decided to fish an area of the lake known as the west pond. This is almost a separate lake that is separated from the main lake by the road causeway, although they are connected. We decided on this area because no one else was fishing there & we had noticed a lot of fish rising in one corner where the light breeze had blown a lot of Buzzer shucks & debris. We set up our rods with teams of small buzzer & Daiwl Bach type flies on floating lines. Pete cast out & was into a hard fighting Rainbow of about 1.5lb on his first cast. I hooked & lost a fish on my third cast & within 20 minutes we had both caught 2 fish apiece. Three of them were smallish stock fish, but I had this nice 3lb 6oz Rainbow that gave me a cracking fight.

All the fish were caught on Daiwl Bach’s fished on the point. As there was a five fish bag limit at the fishery, we decided that we did’nt want to finish too soon & went for a walk up the main arm of the lake to try for some of the big resident over-wintered fish. This turned out to be a big mistake, as shortly afterward the mist lifted, the sun got really hot & the breeze dropped to leave the lake looking like glass. We then spent the next 9 hours fishing with hardly a bite. The only other highlight of the day was this low flying bi-plane that came in low over the lake.

As the evening drew on we eventually saw a few fish being caught down by the lodge & heard that they were taking small olive Damsel fly patterns. So we moved down the lake & eventually managed one more fish each, before deciding that the pub had more allure. All in all a nice day, if a little too hot & bright for Trout fishing.
