Talking Trout 'N' About!

As i said, i was going to go fishing today, and so i did. got up early to make a day of it, 20 past 6, got everything ready, loaded up the bike, (yes, my bicycle!!) and set off for West House Trout Lakes at 7:30.

Arrived to see not a breath of wind and only 2 others there, i was happy about that .

So i set up, paid myself in and got on with fishing! My tackle was (bear this in mind folks!) : 9'6" 6/7wt rod. 5lb leader. floating line. and to start with, a cats whiskers.

a fish jumping clear of the water in front of me gave me confidence, early in the day. then i moved a bit and tightened into something which briefly came off. so i cast out again quickly to the same spot and retrieved. after about 10 seconds, i tightened into my first fish of the day. i thought it was nothing until it realised it was hooked. then my rod buckled and it ran like a bat outta hell!! my heart raced and i started shaking, as whatever was on the end of my line was like a freight train! it took me all of around 35 minutes to land the beast, once jumping clear out of the water! Turned out to top the scales at 13lb 8oz!! a cracking rainbow if i may say so! first pb of the day. and on very light gear.

So after releasing it safe and sound i chucked out again, and literally after 2 strips, i was into another fish! this time a lot smaller, but a lot quicker and less dogged in its fight, about 3 lb i think

after that i continued to catch 2 more rainbows, one about 2lb, the other about 2.5lbs, then moved. by now the wind had picked up slightly.

a quiet spell came next, until dad came and checked up on me, amazed at the size of the pb i had caught! then i got another after about 15 mins of him leaving. about 2.5 lbs again.

decided to go into the clubhouse thingy for tea and sandwiches (with the crusts off, we are fly fishing!) then i ventured out into stronger winds to have a bit more of a fish.

then with the winds about 15 mph, gusts to 20, i tightened up on something else which had my rod buckled!! after 25 minutes of doggedness, i heaved the monster in. A 9LB GOLDEN TROUT! it was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!! i got some lads to take a piccy then returned it to its home.

not much else to say apart from the winds picked up considerably, maybe gusts up to 30 mph, terrential horizontal rain, lovely flyfishing weather, with only a 3lber then nothing.

as i biked home, i had a sense of accomplishment, 9 fish, two BRILLIANT pb's, one rare golden trout, a double figure fish as well, to say the least, i am EXCEEDINGLY chuffed with myself. also, the two big ones had blue tags on them, so i have won 2 free days of fishing!! (oh yeah, 3 points!!)
