Winter Trout Can anyone help ? I'm living in Norway and am surrounded by lakes and rivers full of native Brown Trout. From May to October they are active and I've had some great sport but as soon as winter comes they just disappear ! They must be somewhere so how do I tempt them - I've tried sinking line with every nymph pattern I have, spinners, rapala and even the trusty worm but nothing. Any ideas ? __________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/norwegian.breaks

Re: Winter Trout In the UK Trout spawn in the winter. I guess they do the same in Norway? We're not allowed to fish for them at this time of year. Maybe you could try perch fishing?

The only Trout that i,ve fished for here in the Winter are Rainbow Trout. The best technique that i've found is slow & deep fished Lures or Nymphs (Damsel nymphs are good) . Slow fished / twitched Bloodworm patterns can also do well. The problem with winter fishing is that the water can be very clear so fine flourocarbon leaders are also important. __________________ One man's fish is another man's poissons http://www.deepsea.co.uk http://www.wildtrout.org

Re: Winter Trout I agree - I've just started salt water fly fishing and have been amazed at the different species you can catch. There's an abundance of Pollack here right now and I'm having great sport with them - in fact I'm releasing most of them as the freezer is full ! As for the trout, I'm trying to locate a lake that holds Ferox as that is my ambition this year - a BIG one ! regards Doug __________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/norwegian.breaks

Re: Winter Trout Doug sorry i cant help you with the Trout problem ,i only go sea fishing. But maybe you can give me a bit of advice I m off to Tromso for most of Febuary and was wondering what gear, lures to take and what species i could expect from the shore on what tactics. Thanks in advance john __________________ Come on you HULL!

Re: Winter Trout Hi John, Tromso is a long way up from here and I would imagine much more of a rugged coastline. For Pollack fishing here I use a 1 1/2ib test carp rod and fish with a mixture of lures my favourite being the "flying condom" 15gm. If you're fishing in deep water from rocks I would suggest a sturdy uptider for casting or a 30 -50 lb boat rod if you can just "drop in " Pirks used with muppets are the most productive round here but if you take a box or 2 of frozen squid I am sure you will get a result. Dont forget a landing net or drop net as it can be really dodgy landing a fish from the rocks. Beer, fags & spirits are mega expensive here so bring as much as you can carry - customs are usally half asleep ! If you can, try and get out on a boat as there will be monster cod about at that time of year. Have a good trip and if you ever fancy South Norway drop me a line. regards Doug __________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/norwegian.breaks

Doug if you are fishing lakes then try a Booby or Razzler type of lure fished very very slow on a hi D line on the bottom. It's a killer method in clear cold water. Short leader of 2-3 feet to start and then if no takes shorten it to as little as 10inches.

Re: Winter Trout Thanks for the tip but the lakes are so deep here I haven't got a fly line long enough ! Have had a couple by freelining Lobworm but the ground is getting too hard to dig now. __________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/norwegian.breaks
