Question New To Fly Fishing

Hi there
ive moved house and theres a stocked reservoir only 2 miles away. im keen to learn how to fly fish? Ive looked at starter kits online for around the £60 mark which i thought would be fine for me to start with.
Can you fly fish at this time of year and if so whats a good fly to use- dark water?

Many thanks
Goggs (Lockerbie)

Cool Re: New To Fly Fishing

Hi Goggs, Welcome to the forum.

Yes you can fish this time of year and sometimes the fishing is better as the water has cooled down a bit.

£60 for an outfit sounds a bit cheap to me, but up your way Glasgow Angling do some nice gear at reasonable prices

Don't be fooled by the peaty looking water...its actually very clear most of the time unless there has been some heavy rain and the water has coloured up because of that.

I would use some kind of nymphs say Hares Lug, Diawl Bach Pheasant tails, Black Pennels, Bloody Butcher etc as I know from experience of fishing in Scotland the fish there seem to have a fly prefrence all of their own.

Ask some of the locals they will probably be in the know

Good luck

What do you mean unless there has been heavy rain. It is Scotland!!
That is why I moved to the sunny south.
