Fly dimensions

Hi Guy's. Being new to Fly fishing I wonder if I dare ask questions about Flies. In particular I need to know the physical dimensions of the various flies. Are Salmon flies bigger than Trout flies? I know that flies seem to come in a variety of hook sizes. Are the flies on small hooks smaller than the flies on large hooks? Independent of hook sizes, what are the biggest flies in general use today? I hope that I shall not be taken for a time waster and that some knowledgeable member will spare me the time to give me the answers that I seek. Many thanks. Cypher.

Re: Fly dimensions

Hi cypher, welcome to the forum. Not too sure what you`re looking for, but I`ll post a few pics that`ll hopefully answer your question.

(The 50p piece gives you perspective).

Pic. 1, is a pike fly, tied on a size 2 hook, probably one of the biggest you`ll use in fly fishing.
Pic. 2, are salmon flies, tied on a size 6 up eyed hook,(the top 2 are tied onto double hooks),
Pic. 3, are salt water flies, tied on size 6 hooks.
Pic. 4, are fresh water lead head lures, tied on size 8 hooks, for rainbow trout.
Pic. 5, are trout flies, are tied on sizes 14 and 16 hooks.

14 and 16 are possibly the most common size of trout river flies, but I`ve fished for trout with flies as small as size 22 (a nightmare to tie ), depending on conditions. Most trout wet flies are tied on medium down eye hooks and dry flies on fine wire up eyed hooks.
From the pike fly to the trout fly, you can see the difference in the hooks. Hope this has helped somewhat.

Peter
