| Re: The Perfect fly-fishing tackle I reckon the perfect fly fishing tackle would be, a rod and reel that would set your fly down exactly where you wanted it to be, regardless of how bad your casting was and the said fly had the ability to change itself to whatever was hatching at the time lolAs chub 1 has already said, it depends on where and what you`re fishing for. On large rivers and stillwaters, a 9`0" 6/7 or 7/8 AFTM and a 6/7 or 7/8 reel, loaded with backing and a floating line to suit. On large stillwaters a spare spool for the reel is a good idea, load it with a sinking or intermediate line, for when the fish are that bit deeper in the water. The heavier lines tend to help your casting if you`re new to the sport, especially if it`s a windy day (tapered leaders will also help). On small rivers and stillwaters where you don`t have to cast too far, a 9`0" 5/6 rod, same weight reel, should do nicely, again with a spare spool for an Intermediate or sinking line for the stillwaters. I think myself that if possible, book in for a couple of casting lessons, you won`t regret it, the difference it`ll make to your casting is amazing. On makes and brands, the dearest rods and reels, don`t make for more or bigger fish, only a bigger hole in your bank balance lol. You can buy a starter set-up quite cheap, so if you decide that fly fishing is not for you, then you haven`t spent a fortune. Otherwise, Greys, Wychwood, Flextec, Airflo and Abu all do cheap yet dependable rods and reels that won`t skin you and some tackle shops will let you try the set-up before you buy. Hope this helps in some way, good luck. Peter ![]() |
