Hello all! Hi there, just a quick hello to all, i have been reading the threads on the forum for ages and i decided to join in, my name is peter and i live at port carlisle in north cumbria, i got into fly fishing last spring when i went with one of my pupils to Watendlath tarn near keswick, i lost one and then managed to catch a rainbow, WOW! what a thrill it was! and excuse the pun but i was hooked! since then i have looked, listened and had advice and support from lots of people, i like to fish rivers (mostly with wet flies) and go to different places to fish, e.g. rivers Eden, Irthing, Caldew, Ellen, this fly fishing business has lots of different aspects that can be confusing for us new starters, rod, line, leaders, which fly? and loads more, but i have had some results, from a few greyling over the winter to trout from different rivers, my best being on saturday on the river Caldew, a superb 2 1/4lb trout, and at £5 for a day ticket it was super value, one problem i have been having is this, i have been getting good bites as in strong tugs, but no takes, ive been told it could be either the fly has a long tail on and the fish spit it out, or the hook is too big, anyone any ideas? cheers in advance, peter

Re: Hello all! Cant help with your question but i guess it could be the hook is too big as suggested, ..anyway, welcome to the forum mate __________________ Shore Species 2012: Bugger All !!

Hi and welcome, I fish rivers 95% of the time and the biggest fly I use is a size 14, but more often than not, sizes 16s and 18s. If you`re using bigger flies than this, try down sizing and see if this helps. It could also be smaller trout just nipping at the fly, they can give a heavy tug too. Hope this helps. Peter ![]()
