Re: trout fishing

I suppose its got queit a bit to do with where you are fishing? I mean for instance, wide slow/fast moving river with no casting obsticles or small stream type places with lots of obsticles ect. I have fished rivers of all these types in the past and have on most of them been queit comfortable with a set up simular to yours. But where i live the local river spots can be very confinded, narrow with ten foot vertical walls. A shorter rod easies casting and you can obtain better presentation with a lighter outfit. I find the lighter you go with the set up the more fun you can have with the Brownies. If it aint broke don't fix it? if you manage ok with what you have, stay with it for a while until your fishing demands more from your tackle.

Re: trout fishing

A #7 line is overkill for river trout fishing, not only from a presentation point of view, but also due to the risk of bouncing off small fish and bending out small hooks when you lift into a fish. That's the sort of thing I'd use for Salmon in the warmer months.

For small streams I use an Orvis Superfine 6ft #2, for small-medium sized rivers a 7ft 10" #4 and for everything else, a 10ft #4 Streamflex and a 9ft #5 St Croix Avid.
