Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

Has anyone tried fly fishing for coarse fish such as carp and roach etc?

I want to practice my casting and this seems the cheapest way and could be quite fun, but I don't want to put other anglers backs up in the process.

Has anyone done it or had abuse shouted at them for doing so?

Also what is the best tackle to use?

Do you have a fly rod ? you need something about a 8 weight , i use 8lb line on a okuma pin reel, i make my flies by glueing/whipping a elastic band to the shank of a size 8

Re: Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

I do have a 7-8 fly rod, interesting about the elastic band.

I hear you can use biscuits glued to a hook have you ever tried this.

I'd go with a 9wt rod, as you will have to steer a strong fish away from snags. A tapered leader consisting of a 15lb butt tapering down to 12lb at the point will aid presentation and turnover of the bait/fly.

Re: Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

Still not worked up the courage to give it a go yet. went and had a look at Keston Ponds in Kent but it was quite busy so i didn't bother. Anyone know of anywhere in kent that is usually quiet and preferably free?

Re: Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

I use a fly called a superbonio, which I get from sportfish.co.uk
I have caught a variety of coarse fish whilst fly fishing, sometimes intentionally, other times by accident, all welcome.
Perch I have found like greeen boddied gold head nymphs. plus a range of sparkley wets such as a silver butcher.

Re: Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

Forgot to say that the super bonio looks just like a dog biscuit, floats in a similar way too.

Re: Fly Fishing for coarse fish?

Perhaps there might be a flyfishing chapter for coarse fish in the fly fishing section?
