| Newbie and Kids kit Afternoon guys, I'm totally new to this fly fishing. I went a couple of weeks ago with my brother-in-law and now can't wait to get started myself. I'm also going to try the impossible and get my 10 year old step son to put down his Xbox controller and pick up a rod and get real excitment. From what i've pieced together i was going to go with a 10' #7/8 rod with a W/F sinking #8 line and a D/T floating #7 line does this sound about right? also could i make life easier and just buy everything in double or is it advisable to buy kids a smaller rod? we'll be fishing mainly lakes and trout farms until we get the hang of it, and hopefully it'll be easier to catch, to keep the little guys interested any help would be appreciated. |

| Re: Newbie and Kids kit A 10ft #7/8 rod is a good all-round tool but for trout fishing on a large number of waters it may be a little too heavy-handed. I use 9ft #5 and 9ft 6" #6 rods for all of my stillwater fishing and the latter rod can easily handle a Di3 and all but the nastiest of lures. While distance may suffer at first with a lighter rod, presentation and getting the fly at the right depth is more important. A good caster with a lighter rod will cast a heck of a lot further than a lousy caster with a heavy rod. Too many anglers look at the water 20-30 yards away than directly under their feet. As for kids, a 10ft rod will total your stepson's arms before the end of the day. You might want to look at something in the 8ft #4 to 9ft #5 region. Double taper lines are good but for starting out I would always recommend weight forwards. They'll help you to load the rod when starting out. Remember not to be conned by manufacturers into buying a £40-50 line in a nice, flashy box (although I'll make an exception for the Rio gold). The same applies to so called 'distance lines'. I use lines in the sub £20-25 category and they've outlasted lines costing twice the price. If you need advice on choosing rods and the extras such as reels, leader material, flies etc. then please don't hesitate to ask. |
