help Hi all, I've just started fly fishing using local trout lakes in south east wales, I've caught 1trout more by luck than skill. Can someone tell me generally what type of flies to use, I've bought a selection off the internet, tried loads of them but never sure if I have selected the right fly for the time of the year. My last 3 outings were fishless and I love being out in the countryside but knowing that I am using the right fly will at least stop me feeling that I might as well put a conker on the end of the line and give me some hope. Thanks, Happy.

Re: help Hello happy I will watch this thread with interest. I just managed to get a fly rod, and reel. Now I have to learn how to cast it ( that is for a quiet few days in the off season) but which fly to use when is the question I have. I am interested in trout and grayling on chalk streams, so will be watching the hatchings and what they take when I do ordinary coarse fishing. I also fancy a bash at some sea fishing with flies, got some easy bits of harbour near work, and some mullet about, so come the better weather I will try that, but I have no idea what to use as a fly for them. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards.

Re: help Hi Happy, lurer,s are mainly used this time of year like cats whisker ,minkies, tadpoles, on a intermediat line.If you get the echo or argus on a thursday they will give you a fishing report on the trout lakes here in S.E. Wales and what flies are catching. We have a small fly tying club at the central club on a wednesday night at cefn fforest you are welcome to join in or just chat about fishing. Flyman

| Re: help This might be a bit hard at the moment with 2 flies well one indicator and one fly or you could use a pimp with a buzzer or anything realy below it. But its best in calmer water because the fly if not weighted will be diagonal in the water underneath the indicator which could mean your a foot out of depth from were you think you are. | Re: help I have fished with orange blobs quite a few times....when the fishing gets hard they always produce. Inter or sinking line and stripped hard, trout go insane for them. Banned on some waters for being too good so check first...! http://www.diptera.co.uk/patterns/b/blob_orange.html |

Re: help In choppy conditions I tend to use a sinking or intermediate line with a small lure such as a Blob or a size 10 Cat's whisker. In calmer conditions I stick to a floating line and a team of nymphs under an indicator. Whatever you do don't switch onto automatic mode in winter by just using large lures on sinking lines, there are times when smaller patterns such as nymphs are far more effective, I would recommend asking the fishery manager for info on the most effective flies to use.
